Statement from APA on the Anniversary of George Floyd's Death

May 25, 2021

On April 20, 2021, 330 days after George Floyd was killed, some small measure of justice and accountability was served when a jury found Derek Chauvin guilty on all counts.

Today marks the anniversary of George Floyd’s death.

At this one year mark, APA has spent time contemplating the appropriate words to say. Out of respect and a desire not to drown out those whose voices should be elevated at this time, we will simply say that our thoughts continue to be with Mr. George Floyd’s family and all the families and communities impacted by police use of force.

APA will continue to strive for not only a fair and equitable justice system for all, but also a justice system that holds its actors to account. There is no justice without accountability; and as important as this one instance of accountability is, it is clear there is so much work still to be done. APA will always commit to putting in that work–by continuing to listen to those with lived experiences, by working alongside community partners and leaders on matters of racial inequity, and by collaborating with our membership to dismantle the systemic racism in the criminal justice system’s architecture in order to effectuate safer and more equitable communities for all.
