A crime victim’s rights do not end upon conviction. Often, victims and their families need assistance in establishing and recovering restitution for economic losses. The goal of restitution is to help make victims whole for their economic losses. This presentation will provide general details on identifying what constitutes economic loss subject to restitution. Additionally, it will offer pointers on how to utilize collection tools available in the criminal justice system to recover restitution.  Victims in all cases, including capital and complex homicide cases, may suffer economic losses eligible for restitution. Prosecutors and victims should consistently work to establish and collect restitution for economic losses, even when recovery presents challenges in capital litigation.
