Webinar: Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing
Wednesday, December 15, 2021, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT
Category: Webinars

In 2018, For The People secured the passage of the nation’s first Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing (PIR) law, California Assembly Bill 2942. This was the first law in the country that allowed prosecutors to look back at unjust, excessive sentences. Since the law took effect, For The People has led California's implementation of this new law by partnering with elected prosecutors and stakeholders across California. Now, during a pivotal moment, Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing is expanding beyond California and reaching new states, including Illinois, Washington, and Oregon. During this session, For The People’s national team will pull back the curtain to explore the expansion of Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing across the country. Together, they will discuss existing “second look” mechanisms and how these have spread in recent years. They will touch on their work enacting resentencing legislation and establishing resentencing initiatives, dive into the ten phases of legal work required for resentencing, and finally, provide a brief look at analyzing prison data—the first step in the PIR process.
